Synergy of Great People

Good Morning,

Short and sweet today! The end of summer school is within striking distance, the Lake Stevens race is around the corner, and yet summer is still proceeding at a sickening clip.

The neat thing about summer school is that it forces you to work together as a cohesive unit with your team, relying on each other’s strengths to get through various assignments. In an interview with a local business CEO, we received the advice that “great people can make an average idea successful, but bad people can make a great idea fail.” This thought, accompanied with an interesting weekend provided plenty of food for dwelling on.

The other solid piece of advice offered up was that a company that fosters a culture of making mistakes (and letting employees fix them) is going to be far more successful than a company that reams its employees for their errors. Trial and error is one of the most successful ways to grow a business (thank you Thomas Edison), and a creative culture will be stifled, not encouraged, if mistakes are frowned upon.

Needless to say, frivolous errors and lack of attention to detail certainly have their consequences, but a decision that was made at the time, based on information that looked like it would be the correct decision, should never be held against employees.

It seems that corporations we hear about on a day-to-day basis are so focused on results that they lose the value of their employees. What is it about this certain Reno start-up CEO that makes him value his people far more than the profitability of his business? He’s running the business to have fun, employee northern Nevadans, and just offer a great product and grow the reputation of a company.

I’ve run out of gas and don’t know where to go from here. I’ve got nothing left to use for hoping, and the calendar continues to disappear all while fumbling along… I discovered this poem and felt it was worth sharing. Happy Monday.
