Hark, the Herald Angels Sing!

And just like that, we’ve arrived at the final Friday of 2019. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, but let’s be honest – sooooo glad it’s over! I’m ready to be back to normal life for a change.

I’m not always a fan of the Christmas season, just because the hubbub and chaos and noise isn’t always relaxing, well, is almost never relaxing, but then once we’ve survived the insanity and the 26th rolls back around, I find that I actually do enjoy the holidays. The trees, lights, Christmas music (Trans Siberian Orchestra!), and all that comes with it – so very enjoyable.

I will say, that in my many years of playing trumpet, I immensely enjoy Christmas time because the music is fantastic. Yes, there’s a time and place for “Sleigh Ride,” “Winter Wonderland,” and other fairly empty and meaningless pieces, but my all-time favorite has to be Hark the “Herald Angels Sing.” Phenomenal music paired with lyrics that not only remind us of why Christmas is a thing, but bring us back to the truth of this season.

Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.”
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With th’angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem.”
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored,
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity,
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Ris’n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

As we approach 2020 and think about the days and months ahead, the trips we’ll take, the plans we’ll make (and sometimes break), and all the areas that we want to improve, it’s also good to think of the larger picture – the reason. We aren’t here by happenstance, and the gift of life that we’ve been given shouldn’t be taken lightly either.

Wishing you a wonderful 2020, plenty of tacos, and an excellent end to 2019.
